Leading up to the 2020 presidential election, my sister, brother-in-law, and I launched a letter-writing competition using Vote Forward's letter-writing tool to target underrepresented and undecided voters in battleground states. We created a responsive leaderboard using Google Forms where competitors created unique usernames and could see real-time numbers of the playing field, produced an instructional video on how to participate, and mailed out ready-to-go packets of materials to lower the barrier to entry for interested participants. We also recruited several donors to commit to donating the price of a stamp (55¢) for every letter written; competitors could choose between twelve organizations where their earned money would go. For the podium finishers we designed hats (which we also ended up selling). The event drew 55 competitors and resulted in 5,766 letters written and $3,171 donated.
